Carpenter Ants in the Pocono Mountains: Why Mountain Homes Are Especially Vulnerable
Carpenter ants are the most destructive structural pest in the Pocono Mountains. High moisture, wooded lots, and timber construction create ideal conditions. Here's how to stop them.

Carpenter Ants in the Pocono Mountains
Carpenter ants (*Camponotus pennsylvanicus*) are the most common structural pest L&L Pest Control treats across Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton counties. In the Pocono Mountains specifically — with its combination of high annual rainfall, wooded lots, and timber construction — carpenter ant pressure is higher than in suburban Lehigh Valley or urban settings.
Why Mountain Homes Are Vulnerable
Three factors make Pocono properties particularly attractive to carpenter ants:
Moisture. Monroe and Pike counties receive over 50 inches of rain annually. Moisture accumulates in crawl spaces, around foundation sill plates, and in the wood structures of decks and porches. Moisture-softened wood is exactly what carpenter ants seek for nesting.
Forest proximity. Parent colonies in rotting oak stumps and fallen logs 50 feet from your foundation send satellite colonies into your walls. Eliminating ants inside without treating the outdoor parent colony creates a cycle of reinfestation.
Log and timber construction. A significant percentage of Pocono vacation homes feature log or heavy timber construction — more wood surface area, more checking and grain separation, more entry points for carpenter ants than conventional frame construction.
Identifying an Infestation
- Frass piles (coarse sawdust mixed with insect body parts) below walls or windows
- Large black ants foraging after dark inside the home
- Hollow-sounding wood when tapped with a screwdriver handle
- Winged reproductive ants emerging indoors in spring
Professional Treatment
Over-the-counter sprays kill the ants you see but not the colony. L&L's carpenter ant program tracks foraging trails to locate parent and satellite colonies, applies liquid and bait treatments to eliminate them, and provides structural recommendations to reduce future risk.
